En 1850 llegaron a Sevilla para instalarse y vivir en la ciudad los duques infantes de Montepensier. Don Antonio de Orleans y Doña María Luisa de Borbón y eligieron lo que antiguamente era el edificio de la escuela de náutica de San Telmo . lo compraron , lo embellecieron y lo convirtieron en un palacio llamado “Palacio de San Telmo”. El palacio incluía una gran hectáreas de jardines y estaba rodeado por una muralla y en una esquina se construyó lo que es el “costurero de la reina “ que en esos años se construyó por su cercanía al río Guadalquivir como cuerpo de guardia y cuando no había guardia militar se utilizaba para estancia de los guardabosques.
Los duques de Montepensier tuvieron un hijo al que le llamaron Felipe pero murió a muy corta edad y una hija llamada Merceditas que a los 15 años se crio en el palacio y en los jardines del San Telmo.
El duque de Montepensier no llegó a ser rey debido a varios conflictos y su sucesor fue el joven rey Alfonso xii ( su sobrino). El rey Alfonso XII se enamoró de su prima Merceditas y se casó con ella.
Doña Merceditas era muy delicada de salud. Cuando el Rey Alfonso XII se casó con Doña Merceditas duró poco la felicidad de la luna de miel, porque Merceditas al poco tiempo de llegar a Madrid empezó a toser y toser . Los médicos se alarmaron y para quitarle el frio la mandaron a reponerse en Sevilla. Aquí estuvo una temporada intentando que el sol de Andalucía le recuperara. Asi que Merceditas salía del palacio en las mañanas de sol,apoyada de su aya y se iba al costurero donde intentaba distraerse cosiendo.( Por ello su famoso nombre “El costurero de la reina” .) Pero a pesar de ello alfonso XII desesperado viendo que su esposa no mejoraba se la lleva a sanlucar de Barrameda . Pero ni el sol de Sevilla ni la brisa del mar hace que Mercedita se recupere. Después de ello, regresa a Madrid donde tiene su cita con la muerte.
